Fig 1: Character Think/Talk/Act Chart
|
Rosaura's mother, Herminia, is a complicated character. While a minor character overall, at first she seems plays the antagonist. Her actions and language towards her daughter (at first) are grumbles, sneers, and pompous gestures. Her language is brash: cussing, saying, "Get away with you," repeatedly and short, monosyllabic phrases. She seems to be attacking her daughter in the exposition of the story. "The problem with you, young lady, is that you like to fart higher than your a--." (Heker, 2008, p.1)
However, as the plot evolves, we see our protagonists, Rosaura, living the truths of her mother's warnings. It is not Rosaura that Herminia is against but the social elite. Her actions of starching Rosaura's Christmas dress and holding her shoulder at the end show a gentle, yet protective side of the mother. "She noticed her mother's hand on her shoulder. Instinctively she presses herself against her mother's body." (Heker, 2008, p.4) While at the end of the story, Rosaura's mother has retreated to minor character status, she, her words, and gestures are a constant thought and guide for Rosaura. |
